Probiotics beyond the digestive system
We all know that probiotics are good for our gut. Along with the resident gut microbiome they can help with a number of gut functions. But what other parts of the body can benefit?
Beyond the digestive system, we know that the microbes in the gut also interact with the brain and nervous system, the immune system, and the endocrine or hormonal system. Indeed there is considerable overlap in functions in the entire body.
Many researchers believe that the health of your gut microbiome influences aspects of your overall health, including your:
- Mood and pain tolerance.
- Mental acuity and fatigue.
- Inflammation and immune response.
- Metabolism, blood sugar and fat storage.
All of this is under active research. We don’t fully understand how it all works yet. There is, however, enough evidence out there to recommend trying probiotics, especially “live and active cultures”. Look for it on the label.
